It’s been a busy few months at ESV as we’ve worked to complete the first draft of our review into the safety of smart meters. The review stemmed from a handful of meter failures in the northern suburbs in December and January, which were originally thought to have been caused by a high-voltage injection but were subsequently found to be have been caused by criminal damage. Police are investigating.

ESV has released its first report into the regulation of the safety performance of Victoria’s electricity distribution businesses. It details the results of nine separate audits of the distribution businesses and one audit of the transmission business, assessing how well the five companies inspected and maintained powerlines during 2010 to minimise the risk of failure and fire.
